How to Become a Bookie in 2026

Starting an online sportsbook used to require serious capital and a technical team. With pay per head software, an independent agent anywhere in the world can rent a proven platform, keep 100% of the hold and pay only a small weekly fee per active player. Here is how to do it properly.

Step 1: Decide your niche and your players

Every successful book starts with a clear picture of who it serves. Are your players football fans in Latin America who bet the Libertadores and Liga MX on decimal odds? Premier League followers in the UK who think in fractions? Cricket fans across South Asia and the Gulf? NFL and NBA bettors in North America? A mix of all of them?

Your answer drives everything that follows: the odds format you default to, the leagues you promote, your limits and your margin. Also decide whether you want recreational players, sharper professional players, or both. Recreational books run higher margins with lower limits; sharp books need tighter lines, higher limits and more active risk management.

Step 2: Pick a pay per head provider

A pay per head service gives you the sportsbook, casino, racebook and agent back office for a flat weekly fee per active player. This is the single most important decision you will make. Look for:

  • Decimal, fractional and American odds, selectable per player
  • Deep coverage of the leagues your players follow, including live in-play betting
  • A casino and racebook included in the price, to keep players active midweek
  • Multi-currency balances and player sites in your players' languages
  • Support on WhatsApp and Telegram, 24 hours a day, in your language
  • Transparent pricing with no hidden add-on fees, and a free trial

Global PPH covers every point above, from $5 to $9 per head with the first week free. Request a demo to see the agent panel before you commit.

Step 3: Set up your player list and limits

Import your existing players or start fresh. For each player you set an alias, a credit limit or deposit balance, a betting profile (max bet, max payout, parlay limits) and the odds format and language they prefer. Group similar players into profiles so you can adjust dozens of accounts in one click.

A sensible starting point for recreational players is a maximum single bet of $100 to $500 and a maximum payout of 10 to 20 times that. Sharper players should have lower limits until you understand how they bet. Configuration takes about 15 minutes; your account manager can do it with you.

Step 4: Handle deposits and payouts

The platform tracks every balance, but you decide how money moves. Agents around the world use cash, bank transfer, local instant-payment systems (PIX in Brazil, SPEI in Mexico, PSE in Colombia, UPI in India), e-wallets (Skrill, Neteller) and increasingly crypto (Bitcoin and USDT), which settles across borders in minutes.

Decide your settlement day (most agents settle on Monday or Tuesday after the weekend fixtures), agree it with each player up front and stick to it. The weekly figures report in your agent panel tells you exactly who owes what, in each currency.

Step 5: Promote your book

Most books grow by word of mouth. Reward referrals with a free bet or a small credit. Set up a private WhatsApp or Telegram group where you post the weekend's big fixtures and any promotions. If your provider gives you a branded player website with your own domain, that professional look alone converts hesitant players.

Do not underestimate the casino: players who might bet twice a week on football will play slots or live roulette every night if you make it easy.

Step 6: Manage risk with limits, shading and a layoff account

A book makes money on the margin built into the odds, not by betting against its players. Your job is to keep action balanced and exposure controlled:

  • Watch exposure by event. Your panel shows liability on every fixture in real time.
  • Shade lines for sharps. Move the price a few ticks against a player who consistently beats the closing line, without affecting the rest of your book.
  • Use the layoff account. If one side of a match is heavily one-sided, lay off part of the action through the provider so a single result cannot hurt you.
  • Cap parlays. Long accumulators pay big; set maximum legs and maximum payouts per profile.

What does it cost to start?

With pay per head there is no setup fee and no front-end cost. You pay the weekly per-head fee for players who bet ($5 to $9 with Global PPH, depending on volume) and you need enough working capital to pay winners promptly during a bad week. A realistic bankroll is four to six weeks of your expected average weekly hold.

Your first week with Global PPH is free with promo code GLOBAL5, so you can test the platform with real players before you pay anything.

Laws vary by jurisdiction, and in many places they are changing quickly. A pay per head provider supplies software; it does not license you to operate. Research the rules where you and your players are located before you take a bet, and seek local professional advice if anything is unclear.
